Invisible, adjective, meaning too powerful to be defeated or overcome.
Invincible is a story of two couples with different backgrounds and lifestyles brought together when Emily and Oliver move from London and away from their middle-class lifestyle to a small Northern town, and become neighbours to Alan and Dawn.
A number of personal pressures are placed upon Emily and Oliver; their move was a response to the recession and a shift in personal circumstances; Oliver’s mother is in the later stages of her life; and Emily is still grieving for their son who died some years before.
Yet, despite this set of tragic and saddening aspects that are placed upon the characters, the play is incredibly humorous. Oliver is the down-trodden husband, so much wanting to please and cheer his forlorn wife, even to the point of moving to a town he has no connection with, but because Emily has some distant connection to this place as a child (interesting as she has no affinity to it that we see in the play).
Enter the neighbours, Alan and Dawn, invited over by Oliver and Emily in an attempt to get to know each other. Willowy and petite, in her ‘cover-all’ natural cotton home made dress, Emily is in complete contrast to Dawn in her vivid orange lycra mini dress … Alan arrives somewhat later (after the football on TV is finished) along with a case of Carling … you’re beginning to get the picture!
Politics, world poverty, Karl Marx and a collection of cat paintings are the subsequent subjects of the hilarious conversations that take place in the lounge space of Emily and Oliver’s rented cottage. Passion, personal views, and few olives are exchanged … and what would would be revealed about the whereabouts of Vince, Alan’s beloved cat?
