Another Ipswich soldier is being honoured this week

The Borough Council’s latest council house scheme is named after Private Gary Barnes, who was killed in action in Northern Ireland in 1979.

Twenty-two flats have been built on a former garage block off Ulster Avenue in the north west of the town.

Last year, the road that the new Barnes Square is on was named after Private Aaron McClure, of the Royal Anglians, who died in Afghanistan in 2007.

Gary Barnes was just 18 when he died in a bombing at Warrenpoint.

Both men attended Westbourne High School and representatives from the school will join the soldiers’ families and the Mayor, Glen Chisholm, at the latest unveiling ceremony on Friday at 10am.

The Press is invited to attend. Please meet at McClure Way, off Ulster Avenue, Ipswich IP1 5JR.
