People have a further opportunity to have their say on an Ipswich cycling strategy.

A draft Cycling Strategy Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) will help the Ipswich Borough Council take decisions on planning applications.

The Ipswich Borough Council sought ideas from the public in the summer on what the draft SPD should contain. Now, before it is formally approved next spring, a further consultation is taking place.

The draft SPD gives guidance on providing cycle routes, parking and storage in new developments. It builds upon the success of a number of recent cycling events in and around Ipswich including SkyRide and the Tour of Britain events, and the Ipswich Borough Council hopes that more people in the town will take up cycling for commuting and pleasure. Ipswich now also has its own cycle café after La Tour recently opened in Tower Street.

Councillor Carole Jones urges people to get involved in this consultation and said: “We would welcome any suggestions that people have on how we can encourage cycling in Ipswich, and will be looking to ensure that all new development genuinely supports cycling.”

The consultation documents can also be viewed at the Customer Service Centre, Town Hall, (weekdays 8.30am to 5.30pm), Grafton House 15-17 Russell Road, Ipswich (Mon-Fri 8.30am to 5pm), Ipswich County Library, Northgate Street and at branch libraries. The consultation documents will also be available in the La Tour cycle café on Tower Street.

The consultation document, including details of how to respond, can be viewed here.
