Slow and steady wins the race
This reworking of a classic tale as performed for children was truly a pleasure to watch. The stage was small but adequately set with bright, eye catching yet uncomplicated props throughout. The performance was light and upbeat with appropriate and entertaining uses of slapstick and physical comedy.
Although I am a novice in relation to all things ballet the style of dance was not the most traditional at times but rather ballet with a contemporary twist. The cast consisted of six very talented dancers who played a total of nine characters at various points over the course of the performance. The performance stayed true to the popular children’s fable that promotes persistence, humility and determination in the face of a tough opponent giving grounds to the saying ‘slow and steady wins the race’.
It must be noted that the performance featured no dialogue throughout but this was not an issue as music was provided by a four piece band situated just off stage undoubtedly adding to the experience. Overall it can be said that the Tortoise and the Hare was a pleasant experience for all reinforcing the beauty of ballet and dance to the children in attendance.
