An evening of live jazz at St Peter’s by the Waterfront

What a perfect way to end a busy week, soaking up silky melodies from the Hoagy Carmicheal repertoire delivery by the highly accomplished musicians that make up the Chris Ingham Quartet.

They took us on a journey of discovery, spanning Hoagy’s earliest compositions to his most enduring collaborations. Early treats of the evening were the spine tingling ‘Georgia On My Mind’, followed by ‘Wash Board Blues’, ‘Lazy Bones” and Skylark’ to name but a few.

The audience was also treated to some autobiographical facts about the great Jazz artist’s life and influences and a mini Master Class in Jazz composition, all very entertaining.

This was my first visit to St Peter’s at the Waterfront, which has some surprisingly well preserved original features considering it’s re-incarnation. The church is well worth a visit in its own right if only to admire the Tournai font with its wonderful frieze of grinning lions – quite extraordinary.

The team at St Peter’s have done a wonderful job of respecting the fabric of the building and informing the public of it’s illustrious past, whilst facilitation the rich and varied performances it regularly hosts. I look forward to returning - soon.
