Looking for jazz events in Ipswich? You just found it!

Last year we enjoyed a great mix of jazz at St Peter’s by the Waterfront, and we’re already looking forward to a packed programme of jazz events that are planned for 2016. Here is the full list, with links to more information, including how to book. Don’t miss out, get these in your diary and we’ll see you there!

5th February: Phoenix Jazz Band

Phoenix have been entertaining local people for around 10 years, and their music includes a mix of jzz, soul and blues standards. With original arrangements from those including Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder there’s something to get everyone toe-tapping at the first jazz evening of 2016 at St Peter’s by the Waterfront.

4th March: Celebrating Hoagy

Join us as we celebrate the great American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, whose music is brought to you by the Chris Ingham Band. Enjoy a great evening, where the line up includes pianist and singer Chris Ingham and Paul Higgs on trumpet.

1st April: Midnight Oil

Having recorded with artists including Eurythymics and Marvin Gaye, Martin Dobson leads Midnight Oil on alto and tenor sax, and flute. Accompanied by Sam Edwards on keyboards, Bernie Hodgkins on bass and Crissy Lee on drums. Be entertained by their music which includes instrumental jazz, along som pop, soul and funk.

6th May: Horn Factory

Returning again to St Peter’s by the Waterfront Ipswich based Horn Factory are renown for playing big band jazz, with tunes that include those from Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, Jim Martin, Sammy Nestico, Mike Tomaro, Jeff Jarvis and Chick Corea.

3rd June: Andi Hopgood Quartet

St Peter’s by the Waterfront once again welcomes Andi Hopgood. A local artist, Andi will bring her a familiar and well loved evening of all round jazz, supported by her talented quartet.

1st July: Mambo Chutney

This exciting band will get your toes a-tapping and will put a skip in your step. We’re told that spontaneous dancing is often seen when Mambo Chutney visit, so put on your dancing shoes. Their music includes a broad range of tunes from around the world, so be prepared for a continental explosion of sound.

2nd September: Jazz Arrivals

You may have seen and heard Jazz Arrivals at the Ipswich Jazz Festival 2015. St Peter’s by the Waterfront is pleased to welcome the return of Anne Burton on keys and Bob Airzee on drums, alomg with Ivan Osbourne on guitar, Carl Porter on tenor sax nd Neil Saint on bass.

7th October: Jazz At The Movies

Formed to intrepret the soundtracks of the movies this jazz group is fronted by singer Joanna Eden, supported by the Chris Ingham Quartet, featuring Chris Ingham on piano, Frank Griffith on sax/clarinet, Mick Hutton on bass and George Double on drums.

4th November: Morphology Jazz Band

Morphology are a Suffolk based jazz quartet whose music combines 1950s California with latin and calypso beats. And if you know your jazz, you will recognise names such as Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Art Pepper and Lee Konitz.

2nd December: Essential Sounds Big Band

What a way to end the season with the sounds of the Big Band. The Essential Sounds Big Band consists of 18 experienced musicians - a full big band, accompanied by singers. Be entertained by some well known tunes, and join us as we begin the Christmas season in style.

Tickets for Jazz by the Waterfront events at £10 in advance, or £12 or the door. St Peter’s by the Waterfront is a centre for Arts and Music in Ipswich, and was fully restored to its resplendent glory. Open to the public during the day it is also home to the Ipswich Charter Hangings.
