The Communities of Ipswich

Ipswich is a town where heritage and culture jostle against modern day life; where you can find historical architecture nestled beside modern buildings and dwellings. Recorded as the oldest inhabited town in England, Ipswich boosts a number of historical achievements, and many famous people have lived and visited Ipswich, including Thomas Gainsborough, Charles Dickens, and the 'son of Ipswich' Thomas Wolsey.

Ipswich is a progressive town, with a vision for the future. In 2012 Ipswich Borough Council piublished its 15 year plan. The Ipswich Town Centre Master Plan includes details on the proposed developments for housing, transport, culture, business and enterprise, as well as marketing and tourism. This is a public document and is important to everyone who lives in Ipswich. To download your copy of the Ipswich Town Centre Master Plan click here.

As a town, Ipswich is made up of a number of communities, a patchwork that knits together seamlessly, and in the town centre people move through one community into another without realising it. Each of these communities has its own history and identity, and we have gathered together information on the communities of Ipswich which we share with you through the links below. We are continuing to update this section, and welcome your contribution through sharing with us information, photographs or other artifacts that we may add and which will be of interest to others.
