Open to the public, step back in time and admire the grandiose facade

The Town Hall and adjoining Corn Exchange are located at the Cornhill which is in the centre of town. The Town Hall is of a grand design and typical of Victorian architecture in so far as it has an ornate frontage with interesting features including the heads of King Richard1, King John and Cardinal Wolsey, each of whom played a significant role in the history and fortunes of the town. Above the three heads are four statues in stone that represent Law, Order and Justice, Agriculture and Commerce. On top of the building is an open stonework lantern which sits on a small tower which originally had an illuminated four turret striking clock which was made by Dent clock makers London. The bell that is housed in the tower was cast in 1867 by John Warner and Sons, London and the makers of Big Ben.

In its time the town hall has catered for many of the towns key functions, including, space for the corporation fire engine and hose, a police station with seven cells, a library, a council chamber, quarter sessions court, grand and petty jury room, kitchen to service the function rooms (with dumb waiter) and offices for council servants. The building cost £16,000 when it was built in 1878.

During the day the Town Hall offers two unique art galleries that feature contemporary artists. There is a coffee shop which provides excellent coffee and a relaxed atmosphere and a great place to take time out whilst shopping or visiting the town.

There are a number of rooms available for hire within the Town Hall and it is a unique venue for a special occasion
