The Ipswich Martyrs

The Protestant Martyrs Memorial was erected in 1903 to commemorate the lives of nine Ipswich Martyrs who were burnt at the stake for their protestant beliefs under the reign of Mary I.

The memorial was privately funded after the plight of the Ipswich Martyrs was published in a series of articles in the East Anglian Daily Times newspaper. Constructed from stone, brick and marble, the square monument has interesting moulded cornices, and the monument itself sits on concrete steps, and is protected by wrought/cast iron railings (the original still in place).

Take time to read the inscriptions on the base: This Monument is erected to the memory of nine Ipswich Martyrs who for their constancy to the Protestant faith suffered death by burning.

You can now find the memorial in Christchurch Park, close to the round pond, near to Christchurch Mansion. The Protestant Martyrs Memorial is a Grade II listed Building.
