The Ancient House

If you have visited Ipswich you will surely be familiar with the Grade I listed building Ancient House, regarded as one of Ipswich’s most famous buildings.

The Ancient House was originally built back in 1567, and was commonly known as the ‘Sparrows house’, after the Sparrowe family took ownership in the 1590s. It remained within the Sparrowe family  for almost 300 years who were staunch royalists.

A number of adaptations were made to the building by the Sparrowe family. These include decorating the exterior walls with extravagant pargetting, with the Royal Arms of King Charles II set proudly in the centre. Four continents are positioned under each window, Europe, Africa, Americas and Asia. Australasia is missing as it was undiscovered at this time.

Yu can visit the Ancient House and admire the architecture outside and inside too although nowadays it is home to Lakeland, so among the carved beams and original wooden staircase you'll also have the chance to pick up a few kitchen utensils too!
