Ipswich Witches

"It's fast, it's furious, it's family entertainment and it all happens here in Ipswich at Foxhall Stadium!"

What is Speedway?

It is four laps of all out speed, control, excitement and thrills as four riders, two from each team go head to head in a race for the chequered flag in honour of their team! The best thing is that it all this happens just metres from where you are standing or sitting and the stars of the show (the riders) are easily accessible to see and meet, so don't forget your cameras, autograph books and pens!

How fast are the speedway bikes?

Speedway bikes have a 500cc engine which runs on Methanol, one gear, a clutch and NO BRAKES and can accelerate to 60 mph which is faster than a Formula 1 car!

Great family entertainment with a warm welcome at Foxhall

So come along and enjoy the thrills of speedway racing with the Ipswich Witches at Foxhall Stadium near Ipswich, Suffolk. The “Witches” compete in the British Premier League and race night is usually a Thursday evening from March – September normally commencing at 7.30pm (first race 7.45pm).

Ipswich Witches – Proud to be part of Ipswich’s sporting heritage

Ipswich Witches speedway forms part of the rich sporting heritage that Ipswich has to offer.
Speedway in Ipswich was established in 1950 when a purpose built track was built for speedway and race meetings were held from 1951 – 1965 when the track was resurfaced for the use of banger and stock car racing. During the 1950s speedway was one of the most popular spectator sports with attendances at Foxhall of around 20,000.

In 1969 a new speedway track was built by John Berry who was keen to see the return of speedway to Foxhall and racing has continued at Foxhall to the current day. John Berry was responsible for building a team of mainly locally born riders who went on to dominate British Speedway during the 1970s and helped to provide Ipswich with a worldwide reputation for speedway racing and promotion. And as a result Ipswich has attracted some of the world’s finest riders who have proudly worn the Witches race jacket. Today the Ipswich Witches are promoted and directed by two of Ipswich’s Speedway icons, John Louis (Promoter) and his son Chris Louis (Director of Speedway) who work tirelessly with their team to ensure that the people of Ipswich and the surrounding area can continue to enjoy this high octane sport.
