Grandma Saves The Day - A Theatre Review

Grandma Saves The Day - A Theatre Review

I think it is safe to say that Grandma Saves the Day at the New Wolsey Theatre was one of the funniest shows I have ever had the joy of watching. A spectacular combination of 80s hits, side-splitting comedy and pure talent takes to the stage to tell the story of the Giles family and their fight to fit in on an Ipswich council estate. All music is played live by the actors, creating a thrilling and entertaining evening for the entire family to enjoy.

The title role of Grandma Giles was played by Steve Simmonds, whose sustainability of character throughout the entire show was incredible. His dedication and commitment to the role amazed me and ensured no part of the story was ever lost. The entire cast seemed so in sync with each other and very well-rehearsed, which meant a smooth-running show was presented to the audience. The portrayal of Margaret Thatcher and Rupert Farley-Rusk by Alice Keedwell and James Haggie stood out massively to me. I felt that these two performers worked particularly well together, using each other’s energy to lift the hilarity of the show even further. A mention, of course, also has to go to the multi-talented Ben Goffe, playing Eric. His multitude of skills presented as the show went on left the audience with their jaw to the floor!

Obviously, some credit has to go to the amazingly talented production team who helped put on this show. From lighting to sound, from set to props, everything looked and sounded perfect. I often feel let down by the lack of credit given to the creative team of a show but was pleasantly surprised to find a gesture given to lighting, sound and backstage in the final curtain call.

On the whole, Grandma Saves the Day was a truly masterful piece of theatre, which has something for absolutely everyone to enjoy. I found myself laughing at some of the jokes hours after leaving the theatre, showing how utterly hilarious the show was.

So, what are you waiting for? If you fancy a hilarious night out with Grandma Giles herself, book tickets now! “Grandma Saves the Day” runs until Saturday 18th May at the New Wolsey Theatre.
