Jazz by the Waterfront

Jazz by the Waterfront, live music in Ipswich to entertain and inspire

On the one hand, jazz is the music that many people claim to like, but actually know almost nothing about. On the other, probably as many people claim to dislike jazz without realising that many old classic tunes they might hear on the radio and hum along to are, in fact, jazz standards. Even “King of the Swingers” from Disney’s The Jungle Book is jazz, and we all like that don’t we?!

For the fearful – jazz is not all 40-minute-long free-form improvised tracks with no discernible melody. It can range from blues to “trad” jazz (think Louis Armstrong-style) through swing and big band sounds to very contemporary songs you probably know. In fact jazz has had a major influence on most popular music genres in the 20th century, including rock and hip-hop, as well as hugely-popular singers like Michael Bublé and Harry Connick Jr.

Whether you’re an aficionado or an amateur, you can now enjoy jazz on a regular basis in the intimate club-like surroundings of St Peter’s by the Waterfront. Their monthly performances have ranged from soulful singers to big bands, and are set to continue with a wide range of music from local and more widely known acts.

About St Peter’s by the Waterfront

St Peter’s by the Waterfront is a beautifully-refurbished church between Ipswich’s town centre and Waterfront, converted in 2008 into a heritage and arts centre, and a venue for music, theatre and other community events. As part of a registered charity the centre relies on bookings, ticket sales and donations and receives no ongoing external funding.

St Peter's by the Waterfront is an excellent music venue thanks to the great acoustics and, despite the stained glass windows and huge vaulted roof, in the evening it transforms into a much cosier place – rather less churchy and a lot more groovy!
