Green showcase at community garden fun day

Organised by ActivLives, a Suffolk charity which grows stronger people and communities, ‘Into the Woods’ Big Garden Party 2017 promises to be a great day out for all the family.

Children will be able to try their hand at archery and bushcraft, have their face painted as a woodland creature, and make a bird box to attract feathered friends to their garden or local woodland.

Bring along a teddy - or try to win one - pick up a picnic at the Pavilion café, and sit on the grass to listen to our headliner band - Honey and the Bear, or wander down the site to listen to a woodland tale with Bards Aloud.

On the honey theme, we will be running a tour of our community bee hives, and you can sample our latest crop, as well as find out how to get involved with community beekeeping or sponsoring a hive.

To get closer to nature, you can pond-dip with Ipswich Borough Council education rangers, learn about hedgehogs and how to help them thrive, and talk to Master Composters on the all-important subject of garden waste and keeping our soil healthy.

This annual showcase of gardening, growing and nature - and getting fit and healthy in the great outdoors - is also an opportunity to look around the gardens and wild areas, browse our range of good-quality plants, get ideas for your own garden or local green space, and try our delicious produce.

You can also find out about volunteering with us. Come and talk to our staff and volunteers and make an ‘Over the Hedge Pledge’ to make a difference in this wonderful big garden in the heart of Ipswich!

For children, there will be a magic show, balloon-modelling and drumming workshops with Mr Bean, as well as a carousel and bouncy castle.

ActivLives will have tea and cakes to enjoy on the Welcome Space as you listen to our very own Keep on Rockin’ singing group and other musicians. Or, for the more energetic, pedal yourself a smoothie!

You won’t go hungry - there will be a barbecue by Wots Up Club, and a selection of multicultural food courtesy of the Suffolk Refugee Support Forum, as well as ice cream and other goodies.
Meanwhile, you can try your hand at bowls with members of Cowell’s Bowls Club, try your luck with the raffle or tombola, and browse our great range of stalls - including Maidenhall Residents’ Association handmade cards and books. Meanwhile, Maidenhall Allotments will offer veg and produce, along with games and activities.

•Don’t forget to be green and walk, cycle or take the bus to the event if you can. Disabled parking is at the Pavilion, with some additional parking space in the car park there. Top section of Bourne Vale Social Club is available for use. Otherwise, parking is on the surrounding streets. Please respect local residents and do not block driveways.
